In spring, we go outdoors

Outdoor accommodationDuring the winter, the captive population of Common Midwife Toads is maintained within the Breeding Centre, at a relatively high temperature to avoid winter mortality and encourage their growth and reproductive development. However, the days are beginning to become warm and sunny, and the Common Midwife Toads can enjoy being outside.

We have a small fenced enclosure outside at the Breeding Centre where we keep some breeding individuals during the spring and summer. Each individual, which we recently moved outside, is marked with a microchip that allows easy identification. Thus, we can record all the important events in the lives of our toads.

Reading the microchip This outdoor installation has a small pool and an area where toads can take refuge. When the males manage to reproduce successfully, they will release the clutch of eggs placing them into the water, where the tadpoles (larvae) can swim freely. At this stage, we will remove the larvae from the water to avoid predation by aquatic insects and to assist their development, caring and feeding them in aquariums within the Breeding Centre. The shelters are particularly important because they are needed to protect our toads from the intense summer sun and the chilly nights of Rascafría.
