It is common knowledge that plants do not have any holidays so we are worried because it has been a long time since we last saw certain plantas, that used to be here, inside Sierra de Guadarrama National Park’s territory, not knowing if they have hidden from cattle and humans or have disappeared due to climate change. The truth is we have not been able to find them in spite of having been spotted by eminent botanists such as Willkom, Lange, Pau, Font Quer and Cutanda between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Corydalis cava (L.) Schweigger & Koerte subsp. cava

Fam.: Papaveraceae.

Distribution: Europe; scattered through the North of the Iberian Peninsula. If their existence were to be confirmed at Sierra de Guadarrama, it would be a species with huge biogeographic interest at the edge of its natural range. It has been cited in the Peripheral Protected Area. It is a nemoral plant present in deciduous forests.

There are old citations from Fernández González (1988) at El Paular or La Granja, but they have not been confirmed yet.

Fagus sylvatica L.

Fam.: Fagaceae. N.v.: haya.

Distribution: C and W Europe; Pyrenean-Cantabrian mountain range, N Iberian System mountain range, Central System mountain range, Beceite Pass. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

It has been cited by Fernández González (1988) in ‘El Paular’ Valley. Recently, some individuals have been found at Sierra de Guadarrama Mountain Range (Gascones) but outside the National Park. There are also some planted individuals in Rascafría and Navarredonda y San Mamés. It is a species included in Madrid Threatened Species Regional Catalogue under “of special interest” category.

Gentiana pneumonanthe L.

Fam.: Gentianaceae.

Distribution: Europe, W Siberia. Iberian Peninsula: N, C and settlements to the S (Sierra Nevada and Doñana). It is a species at the edge of its natural southern distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains, with several southernmost settlements.

There are old citations of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988) at Peñalara Massif, without having been found again. There is a dubious citation from Martínez (2005) in Valsain.

Geum montanum L.

Fam.: Rosaceae.

Distribution: Central Europe Mountains; Iberian Peninsula: The Pyrenees and Cantabrian mountain range.

There are old citations of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988) in the Peripheral Protected Area, but they have not been confirmed yet. If they were to be confirmed, it would be the only population of the Central System mountain range, at the edge of its natural distribution range.

Hypericum androsaemum L.

Fam.: Guttiferae.

Distribution: W and S Europe, Asia and N Africa. Iberia Peninsula Northern half and Southern Mountain Ranges. It is a species at the edge of its natural southern distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains, with several southernmost settlements.

It has been cited in the Peripheral Protected Area. There are ancient citations of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988), without having been found again inside the territory. It is a species included in Madrid Threatened Species Regional Catalogue under “vulnerable” category.

Inula helenium L.

Fam.: Compositae.

Distribution: Europe, Asia. N Iberian Peninsula, Iberian System mountain range and Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

It has been cited in the Peripheral Protected Area. There are ancient citations of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988) in ‘El Paular’ Valley, without having been found again in the territory.

Linaria alpina (L.) Miller subsp. alpina

Fam.: Scrophulariaceae.

Distribution: C and S European Mountains, N and C Iberian Peninsula mountain ranges. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

It has been cited in the National Park, at Peñalara Massif (Rivas Martínez, 1963). Later on, it has not been found again. If it were to be seen once more, it would be categorised as a priority species.

Lycopodium clavatum L.

Fam.: Lycopodiaceae.

Distribution: subcosmopolitan; Iberian Peninsula: Pyrenean-Cantabrian mountain ranges, Iberian System – Sierra da Estrela mountain ranges. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

There are ancient citations of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988) in the National Park, at Peñalara Massif, without having been found again in the territory.

This species was included in Peñalara Natural Park Rare, Endemic and Threatened Flora Catalogue.

Orchis militaris L.

Fam.: Orchidaceae.

Distribution: Europe, Asia; N Iberian Peninsula and Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

It has been seen at the Peripheral Protected Area. There is an ancient citation from Rivas Goday, gathered by Fernández González (1988), at El Paular, without having been found again in the territory.

Polygonum viviparum L.

Fam.: Polygonaceae.

Distribution: boreo-alpine, Europe, Asia, N America; Pyrenean-Cantabrian mountain range with one citation at Sierra de Guadarrama. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

It was located at the Peripheral Protected Area. There are ancient citations of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988), without having been found again.

Senecio carpetanus Boiss. & Reuter

Fam.: Compositae.

Distribution: Iberian Peninsula endemic species (Cantabrian mountain range, Iberian System mountain range and Central System mountain range).

It has been cited in the Peripheral Protected Area. There is an old citation of the species gathered by Fernández González (1988) in ‘El Paular’ Valley.

It appears in humid meadows, but it has not been found again.

Trifolium rubens L.

Fam.: Leguminosae.

Distribution: C, E and SW Europe and Western Asia; NE and C Iberian Peninsula mountains. It is a species at the edge of its natural southernmost distribution range, here in Central Spain’s mountains.

There is an old citation from Pau, gathered by Anthos (2012), inside the territory. It has not been found again within the Park.
