Un equipo de científicos del Centro Jambatu de la Fundación Otonga e IKIAM han encontrado vivo el jambato negro (Atelopus ignescens), un anfibio emblemático de las montañas de Ecuador que se consideraba extinto desde finales de los 80. Sin duda un esperanzador descubrimiento que puede tener grandes implicaciones para la conservación de los anfibios.

¿Qué está pasando con el ozono?

El ozono troposférico, cuando se eleva por encima del fondo natural debido a las emisiones causadas por la actividad humana, constituye un problema importante de contaminación atmosférica que afecta de forma crónica a gran parte de la península Ibérica. Las zonas de montañas son especialmente vulnerables a este contaminante por los elevados niveles que registran actualmente y la vulnerabilidad de sus ecosistemas. Aunque se conocen los efectos negativos del ozono en las comunidades vegetales y en la salud humana, se desconoce sus efectos sobre poblaciones animales silvestres, por lo que hemos puesto en marcha un experimento para analizar si la exposición a niveles de ozono elevados afecta al desarrollo de la quitridiomicosis de los anfibios.
