In the Breeding Centre we feed the Common Midwife toads mainly with crickets, which are grown using appropriate food and fresh vegetables. Before offering them to the toads they are dusted with vitamins to enhance their nutritional value.
The Common Midwife toad, like many amphibians, is a visual predator and detects the movement of its prey. In spite of their harmless appearance and small size, from an insect's perspective they are a formidable predator. This makes amphibians great allies of farmers and they also contribute to the welfare of people by controlling insect pests.
In addition, amphibians play a key role in food webs of ecosystems. Amphibians are not only predators, but also a very important food source for many other animals.
