The National Park Limits

Posted in Management zoning

Garganta del EspinarThe official limits of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park are the ones included in the Pronouncement Law, where are featured the official maps and the literal description. Nevertheless to have a clearer idea of where the limits are, it could be summarized as follows: starting at the Navafría Pass, the Park runs basically by the ridges of the Carpetanos Mounts, Cuerda Larga and Siete Picos, drawing an anchor shape figure. Its limits have a 275 km perimeter, with a surface of 33.960 hectares. That extension meets the established requirement by the National Parks Network Law 5/2007 (Ley Red de Parques Nacionales) which determines a 15.000 hectares minimum surface to be a National Park. In addition, the Park extension is sufficient to allow its natural evolution with a minor human intervention. That way it will be possible to maintain its physical and biological characteristics, granting the present natural processes behaviors.

The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park encompasses territories of 28 municipalities, 16 in the Castilla León Autonomous Community and 12 in the Madrid Autonomous Community. Its surface lodges nine natural systems included in the Annex of the National Parks Network Law, with a total of 30.503 hectares surface, which is a 91% of the Park surface. Due to the fact the Park covers the highest altitudes of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the natural systems associated to the altitudinal gradient are distributed in a continuous manner at both sides of the ridges where the Park runs. That is the case for example of the high-mountain pastures, the supra forest shrubs and the pinewoods. The conjoint protection of both slopes, the Segovian and the Madrilenian, under the single status of National Park allows a better preservation of these natural systems.

The National Park running through heights areas emphasizes the mountain and high-mountain ridges and formations singularity when its limits are described. It is relevant to mention the Carpetanos Mounts, with broad panoramic views from its heights, as the Nevero Peak, La Flecha or the Peñalara Massif. In this Massif, the glacial action during the Pleistocene has left numerous witnesses of arches, colluviums, nivation cirques, moraines, glacial depressions, occupied nowadays by peat lands and lakes. From that spot is reachable through El Noruego hill the Cuerda Larga Ridge – La Pedriza, which constitutes a granitic exceptional landform, unique in the Iberian Peninsula because of its diversity and development. On the west side of the Park the third sierra is spread out, the Siete Picos Ridge, formed by an ensemble of a high geomorphologic value granite tors between 20m and 30m high standing over the general mountain substrate. The Madrilenian slope is sharper and rockier than the Segovian, and has a small glacial cirque formed by the wind effect in the snow accumulation, being that glacial morphology one of the most occidental of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park scope holds an important territorial continuity, being very little fragmented by miscellaneous structures. Considering the roads and the railway, there are 18,9 km. The resulting fragmentation of those infrastructures is not a threat for the National Park physical and biological characteristics and its natural processes behaviors. In certain zones, the National Park scope limits have been adjusted in order to minimize the road kilometers and the internal infrastructures number.
